SOC 2 Pentest Evidence: A Handoff Checklist for Your Auditor

Define the evidence request before ordering

A penetration test is one technical assessment that can support a SOC 2 review. It is not the SOC 2 examination itself. Ask the auditor what question the evidence must answer, which system boundary is relevant, and which dates matter. Our suggested handoff package starts with that written request. Without it, a technically useful report may still leave the audit team asking whether an important application, subsidiary, or production environment was covered.

Build a traceability sheet

Create one row per evidence request with an owner, requested period, system name, assessment reference, and delivery status. Link the signed scope to the final report and then to remediation tickets and retest outcomes. Use stable document identifiers rather than repeatedly emailing attachments with ambiguous names. Keep the technical findings in the restricted report. The traceability sheet should let an authorized reviewer navigate the package without exposing credentials or sensitive reproduction material in a broad compliance folder.

Separate assessment facts from management decisions

The assessor records what was tested and observed. Your organization owns decisions about remediation timing and residual risk. Include testing dates, environments, access level, excluded assets, report version, and limitations. For each unresolved finding, supply its current owner and treatment decision. A management acceptance statement should identify the decision maker and review date; it should not be edited into the assessor’s original finding as though the issue had disappeared.

Use a realistic handoff example

Suppose the application was assessed in September and a privileged administration workflow launched in October. The September report remains evidence of its stated scope, but it does not automatically cover the new workflow. Add the release record and the decision about supplemental testing. If a customer asks for all high findings to be resolved, point to the relevant retest results rather than a general statement that remediation is complete. This keeps both the dates and the coverage visible.

Check the package before sharing

Our final review is a simple reconciliation: every requested document is present, every report reference resolves, and every claimed closure has supporting evidence. Confirm access permissions with the auditor and provide a contact for questions. Ask whether a redacted copy is sufficient for downstream customers. Preserve the unredacted original with restricted access. Evidence acceptance depends on the auditor and engagement requirements, so obtain feedback before assuming the package is adequate.

For an efficient review meeting, walk through one completed remediation chain and one unresolved item. Ask the reviewer to find each source document from the index. Any missing link becomes a concrete packaging task before the formal handoff.

Reference and next step

AICPA’s SOC resources distinguish the assurance engagement from supporting technical work. The checklist above is a suggested operational handoff, not an AICPA-mandated document format.

Questions about this topic

Direct answers to common questions about this page.

No. A pentest can supply supporting technical evidence. A SOC 2 examination and report involve a separate CPA assurance engagement.

Provide the current status, owner, treatment decision, and planned review. Do not describe an open finding as retested or closed.
