Review the structure before the formatting
A polished sample can still omit the information your engineers or auditor need. Our proposed review focuses on whether a reader can trace the assessment from scope to observation to action. Start with the scope statement, testing period, methods, access level, and exclusions. A sample report cannot demonstrate how thoroughly your future system will be tested, but it can reveal whether the provider communicates coverage and uncertainty in a usable way.
Read one finding end to end
Choose a representative finding rather than only the most dramatic example. Ask whether the report explains the affected boundary, evidence of impact, preconditions, severity rationale, and recommended corrective action. Redaction should remove customer-sensitive material without making every claim impossible to inspect. If the sample removes all technical evidence, ask the provider to explain how complete evidence is delivered under contract and who reviews it before publication.
Evaluate the engineering handoff
Imagine assigning the finding to a team that did not attend the assessment kickoff. Would that team know which service owns it, what behavior was observed, which assumption failed, and what verification is expected after a fix? Recommendations should be specific enough to guide an investigation without prescribing an unsafe patch. Check whether related observations are grouped sensibly and whether the report distinguishes a confirmed issue from an unverified hypothesis or informational observation.
Check the management view
The executive summary should express relevant business impact without overstating what a bounded test proves. Look for a readable description of material limitations and unresolved concerns. Consider how your security lead would explain the result to an enterprise buyer. A report that says “secure” after a short engagement invites a broader conclusion than the evidence supports. Prefer a clear account of tested scope, observed findings, and actions requiring an accountable decision.
Write down acceptance questions
Our sample-review sheet has columns for report element, observed example, buyer question, and contract clarification. Include the final format, delivery channel, amendment policy, retest format, redaction support, and intended readership. Confirm any auditor-specific expectations before purchase. Requesting a sample should help clarify fit; it should not require sharing production credentials or private architecture. Ask separately about the provider’s methods and actual proposed scope, because a sample is illustrative rather than a guarantee of identical results.
Use the same sample-review questions for every shortlisted provider. Record answers and follow-up evidence in the procurement file, rather than relying on which sample looked most polished during a demonstration or which salesperson gave the strongest assurance.
Reference and next step
NIST SP 800-115 provides broader technical-assessment context. The sample-review worksheet above is our suggested buyer exercise, not a required report template.
Review FailSafe SWARM for the proposed testing model. Businesses considering a focused first engagement can review the first-pentest offer or discuss scope and evidence requirements before purchasing.

Questions about this topic

No. It demonstrates aspects of reporting style and evidence handling. Scope, methods, access, and actual execution still determine the engagement.
Ask whether the format addresses their evidence needs. A sample cannot pre-approve a future assessment or guarantee evidence acceptance.
