Ask which decision the human owns
“Human in the loop” can refer to scope approval, live monitoring, finding review, or customer sign-off. These are different activities with different staffing requirements. Our oversight worksheet assigns an accountable role to each consequential decision. Ask what work is performed by autonomous agents, what is reviewed, and what is outside the quoted engagement. The presence of a support contact does not establish that every action receives specialist approval before execution.
Map decisions across the lifecycle
Before testing, identify the people who confirm ownership, authorize scope, approve access, and review prohibited actions. During testing, identify who receives urgent findings and who can pause the run. At delivery, identify who reviews evidence and resolves disputed findings. After remediation, identify who accepts the retest outcome. Record whether these roles belong to the customer, provider, or another party. Shared responsibility should not become a gap where each participant assumes the other is acting.
Make escalation observable
Ask how an unexpected condition is reported and what happens when the named contact is unavailable. Agree a practical communication channel and escalation order. For a sensitive environment, understand whether the service can stop automatically on defined conditions and how a person confirms the state. Distinguish an advertised ability to pause from an agreed operational procedure. Request evidence that the configured mechanism works for the proposed scope, without triggering disruptive actions in production.
Evaluate review quality through a case
During a POC, choose a representative finding and ask who checked the evidence, how uncertainty was expressed, and how severity was assigned. Also review an inconclusive observation. A disciplined reviewer should be able to explain why a claim was limited or withheld. If the service does not include named human validation, state that plainly and decide whether your internal team can supply the required judgment. Avoid assuming that automation implies no oversight or that oversight implies exhaustive manual testing.
Document the operating model in the agreement
Include role descriptions, expected availability, review depth, escalation, stop authority, and handoff responsibilities. Match these terms to the buyer’s risk tolerance and procurement requirements. A regulated customer may have a specific need for a qualified individual’s signature or specialist review; confirm that need before purchase. The useful outcome is a clear operating model and bounded evidence, not a generic assurance that people are involved somewhere in the process.
Invite the people who will operate the service to the oversight review. Procurement language can describe a workable policy while the on-call team lacks the authority, access, or availability required to carry out the actual stop procedure.

Do not assume so. Ask which manual activities, review steps, specialists, and deliverables are included in the written engagement.
