Business logic pentesting is most useful when a team can name the business rule that must remain true. Workflow outcomes, approval requirements, and entitlement decisions need application context that generic error checks cannot supply.
OWASP describes security failures in the implementation of intended business workflows. OWASP Business Logic Security Cheat Sheet provides the underlying reference. The assessment design below is an original defensive example, not a report of a customer incident.
Translate requirements into invariants
Select a workflow with a clear business consequence, such as an employee expense requiring approval from another person. Write the condition that must hold before completion and the evidence that proves it. Identify actors, states, external dependencies, and irreversible effects. Include which changes should invalidate earlier approval. Product managers and engineers may disagree about those details; resolve that disagreement before calling a test result a vulnerability. The assessment benefits from a small set of precise rules rather than a long feature inventory.
Build a synthetic approval scenario
Use a test requester, approver, and a zero-value or simulated transaction. Exercise the normal sequence, then evaluate approved cases involving a missing step, a repeated step, or a changed request after approval. Avoid real money movements, customer communications, and production inventory. Each case should isolate one rule so the final state can be explained. For an agentic workflow, supply the permitted actions and stopping conditions explicitly; a model's interpretation of the product interface is not an adequate business specification.
Capture state transitions and authority
The evidence should show the starting state, acting identity, relevant approvals, attempted transition, and final stored state. Link application traces to audit events and any downstream worker outcome. A button becoming disabled does not demonstrate that the backend rejects the action. A generic error does not demonstrate that an external integration remained unchanged. Preserve only synthetic artifacts and sanitized request summaries. Explain the actual consequence observed in the test, then distinguish any wider business impact as a reasoned possibility rather than a proven loss.
Keep the result narrow and actionable
Recommend the enforcement location that owns the invariant, then ask engineers to add a regression case that survives interface changes. Retest the approved path as well as the prohibited transition. Document workflows and role combinations not examined. Passing one approval scenario cannot establish that pricing, subscriptions, or account recovery follow their own rules. Specialist human judgment remains useful for ambiguous product behavior and financial impact. Scope recurring assessments around changes to business rules and integrations, rather than promising that automation covers every possible sequence.
A useful assessment artifact
Keep the approved invariant visible in the remediation ticket. The phrase should describe a business outcome, such as independent approval, rather than a specific button or internal function. That wording helps future engineers preserve the rule when interfaces change.
Plan an assessment
Discuss the authorized scope and required evidence with FailSafe SWARM. For a business evaluating an initial engagement, review the first-pentest offer and confirm scope before purchase.

Some patterns can be detected automatically. Application-specific rules and state changes still need explicit context and evidence.
Name the violated invariant, authorized test setup, unexpected transition, demonstrated effect, and the allowed workflow used as a control.
