AWS IAM assessment: explain effective permissions before testing

An AWS IAM permission assessment should explain the authority of a tested identity across relevant policy layers. A role name or one attached policy is an incomplete description of what the identity can actually do.

AWS documents how permissions boundaries constrain identity-based permissions and interact with other policy types. AWS IAM permissions-boundary documentation provides the underlying reference. The assessment design below is an original defensive example, not a report of a customer incident.

Start with a business task

Choose a workload role and describe the exact task it should perform, such as reading one set of synthetic documents. Inventory identity policies, relevant resource policies, organization controls, session constraints, and any permissions boundary. Record which policy version is in force and which principal actually performs the action. A managed policy name is not enough. Ask the cloud owner to explain exceptions and shared resources before deciding whether a broad permission is accidental or part of an approved architecture.

Model an approved narrow-access scenario

In an isolated account or approved staging environment, give the workload its intended role and two harmless resources with different access expectations. Demonstrate the permitted task, then evaluate a specifically authorized denied task. Use owner-provided resource references rather than broad enumeration. Avoid creating or assuming additional roles beyond the engagement plan. Where runtime testing would be unsafe, use policy analysis and record that the result is a configuration inference. The assessment should preserve a clear line between modeled authority and exercised capability.

Capture the effective decision

Collect the acting principal, action category, target resource, relevant context, decision, and audit reference. Keep raw policies in restricted evidence if they reveal internal architecture. An access-denied response can result from several policy layers or service-specific conditions; explain which control caused it when the evidence supports that conclusion. If the cause remains uncertain, state the uncertainty. Conversely, a successful read of a synthetic object demonstrates that action only, not a path to every object allowed by a superficially similar resource pattern.

Retest without expanding the claim

After remediation, repeat both the allowed and denied task with the same role and context. Confirm changes do not break the workload's legitimate dependency. Document excluded resource policies, organization units, and identity federation paths. Permissions boundaries are one part of the policy model and should not be marketed as a universal isolation mechanism. For agentic assessment, dedicate a testing identity and log its actions so evidence can be separated from production activity. Scope any deeper privilege investigation as a new approved objective.

A useful assessment artifact

A permission-decision worksheet should distinguish policy statements, modeled effective access, and actions actually exercised. Keeping those columns separate prevents a review from describing every broad policy pattern as a demonstrated compromise or every blocked request as a complete least-privilege guarantee.

Plan an assessment

Discuss the authorized scope and required evidence with FailSafe SWARM. For a business evaluating an initial engagement, review the first-pentest offer and confirm scope before purchase.

Questions about this topic

Direct answers to common questions about this page.

It constrains permissions that identity-based policies can grant. Effective access depends on the applicable policy model and request context.

No. It proves that request failed in that context. Determine why and compare it with the intended business task.
