API Pentest Scoping: Inventory, Identities, and Critical Workflows

Inventory the interface you actually operate

An API assessment needs a boundary more specific than a company domain. Our suggested inventory lists API hostnames, versions, environment, ownership, documentation, authentication method, and consumer types. Mark deprecated versions that still receive traffic and distinguish public endpoints from private service interfaces. Include important asynchronous components such as webhooks and queues when they affect the agreed workflow. An undocumented endpoint is not automatically authorized merely because a tester discovers it.

Describe identities and permissions

List the user and service roles relevant to the test objective. Explain which resources each role should own, read, modify, or administer. Use synthetic identities belonging to the customer’s test tenants. If access tokens are short-lived, arrange a secure refresh process that does not interrupt the engagement. Never place tokens in the scope document or general contact form. Role names alone are insufficient when permission behavior varies by organization, subscription, or delegated integration.

Choose representative business workflows

Identify actions with meaningful consequences, such as creating a workspace, exporting records, approving an operation, or invoking a paid integration. Provide prerequisites and expected permission boundaries without giving the tester production secrets. A stateful workflow may span several services and callbacks. Clarify which components are included and which are simulated. The goal is a useful coverage plan, not an instruction to generate real financial transactions or affect another customer’s data.

Prepare a bounded example

For a document-sharing API, a practical scope could contain two synthetic organizations, ordinary and administrator accounts, an approved test dataset, and representative share and export actions. The customer defines expected access relationships. Testing then investigates those relationships within written limits. If the same application also exposes a partner API governed by another agreement, list it separately and confirm permission before including it. Keep cleanup responsibilities and test-data expiration in the plan.

Agree evidence and operational controls

Specify rate limits, test windows, emergency contacts, evidence handling, and stop conditions. Ask the provider to report which versions and identities were actually reached. If a documentation gap prevented coverage, preserve that limitation in the final report. A scope list is not proof that each endpoint received equal investigation. At handoff, engineers should receive findings linked to the affected interface and relevant role, with enough bounded evidence to prioritize and verify remediation.

Keep version ownership current during the engagement. If a team deploys a new API revision, notify the assessment contact and decide whether the tested boundary changes. An inventory exported once at kickoff can become stale before report delivery.

Reference and next step

The OWASP API Security Top 10 overview is a useful risk reference. The inventory and workflow worksheet here is a proposed preparation artifact, not an assertion that a Top 10 checklist exhausts API risk.

Review FailSafe SWARM for the proposed testing model. Businesses considering a focused first engagement can review the first-pentest offer or discuss scope and evidence requirements before purchasing.

It helps document the interface, but also record deployed versions, roles, business workflows, ownership, and interfaces missing from the specification.

No. Share access only through an agreed secure channel after authorization and scope are confirmed.
