An enterprise knowledge assistant often trusts an index more than the upload path that populated it. A document ingestion review reverses that perspective: who could place this content here, which parser handled it, and what evidence links the resulting text to the original source? Consider a shared upload area where employees contribute product notes. An attacker does not need to control the model if an unreviewed document can become an authoritative answer source with a misleading owner or stale access policy.
Define the boundary before testing
Inventory upload interfaces, synchronization connectors, supported file formats, parser services, extraction settings, and the metadata retained on chunks. Define the allowed contributors and the decision that makes a document eligible for retrieval. Use small harmless files with known visible text, metadata, and access labels. Agree maximum input size, processing time, and a quarantine path for unsupported material. Include connector imports as well as browser uploads because one may bypass checks applied to the other. Record which components can read the original binary.
Run a bounded assessment
Compare the accepted file with extracted text and indexed metadata. Exercise unsupported formats, incorrect declared types, a failed parser, an interrupted sync, and a harmless document that contains conflicting attribution. Observe whether rejected content or partially extracted chunks become searchable. Use controlled fixtures for content warnings without including weaponized files or exploit payloads. Ask an authorized low-privilege contributor to submit a test note and check whether the system assigns it a more trusted owner or classification than that contributor can legitimately claim.
Keep evidence an engineer can use
Keep the source digest, contributor identity, upload decision, parser version, extraction result, quarantine state, and chunk identifiers. Track where the source access policy entered the pipeline. A report should distinguish parser availability failures, provenance weaknesses, and permission failures. If only extracted text was available for review, say that the binary parser boundary was not assessed. The evidence should let an operator identify and remove every derived chunk from a rejected fixture without manually searching generated responses for a sentence that happened to appear.
Interpret the result and retest
Retest ingestion and cleanup after a control change, including a legitimate supported document. The goal is an operational boundary that preserves useful contribution without laundering arbitrary uploads into trusted knowledge. A document’s accepted format does not establish trustworthy content, and a trustworthy contributor does not make a parser immune to malformed input. OWASP’s file-upload guidance supplies the general file-handling reference. Pair the review with retrieval authorization and answer-provenance checks if the engagement needs to follow a document through the complete assistant workflow.
Assessment scope and next steps
This is a proposed defensive assessment workflow, not a finding about a particular product. Use a staging environment, synthetic records, approved test identities, and an agreed stop condition. Record the model, connector, policy, and application versions so a later result can be compared with the same configuration. Unavailable evidence should remain an explicit coverage gap.

No. File safety, contributor authority, factual accuracy, and embedded instructions are different review questions.
Define an explicit policy. Rejected or incomplete material should not silently become an eligible answer source; verify the chosen behavior with controlled fixtures.
