A tool named read_document can still disclose information to the wrong person. The security question is which document, for which user, under which current permissions. Consider a support assistant with access to customer tickets and an internal escalation tool. A broad service account may make both tools work in a demo while masking the absence of user-level authorization. MCP tool authorization testing should follow a harmless operation all the way to its target object, rather than treating an available tool as an access grant.
Define the boundary before testing
Ask the application owner to define a small permission table. Use two synthetic users, two customer workspaces, a shared record, and a restricted internal record. Identify the authenticated caller, agent identity, service credential, and object owner at every hop. Include bulk search, document preview, attachments, and error details because the same record can leave through several interfaces. The intended behavior should be written before testing. A tool label or prompt instruction is useful context but cannot replace an enforceable access decision.
Run a bounded assessment
First confirm the assistant can retrieve each user’s permitted test record. Then request owner-approved negative cases where a user lacks the relevant workspace or object permission. Use the normal application UI and supported tool invocation path so the exercise reflects deployed controls. Observe whether the tool server checks the individual object after accepting its arguments. Include a permission change during a conversation and a bulk operation containing one forbidden record. Keep the content harmless and stop before touching any real customer material.
Keep evidence an engineer can use
The report should connect the user identity, object identifier, expected policy, tool decision, and final response. Capture whether denied material reached the model context even if the final answer hid it. Disclosure to a model or external processor can matter independently of disclosure to the chat user. Record the accessible fields and the role difference without publishing the test identifiers externally. A strong remediation ticket points to the missing enforcement layer and gives the owner a small regression case for the affected object route.
Interpret the result and retest
Retest both the original route and any alternate preview or search path after the fix. A passing result establishes the tested permission relationships for that configuration, not universal isolation across every tool. New connectors, bulk endpoints, and privileged service roles can change the boundary. OWASP’s authorization guidance provides the general control background. For procurement, ask a provider to name the roles and object relationships it will exercise; a promise to test authentication alone leaves this business question unanswered.
Assessment scope and next steps
This is a proposed defensive assessment workflow, not a finding about a particular product. Use a staging environment, synthetic records, approved test identities, and an agreed stop condition. Record the model, connector, policy, and application versions so a later result can be compared with the same configuration. Unavailable evidence should remain an explicit coverage gap.

No. Reading a restricted customer record or secret can create a serious disclosure even when nothing is modified.
The application must enforce that decision using trusted identity and resource data. Model reasoning can help propose an operation, but cannot grant access.
