MCP token audience validation asks a narrow question: will a server accept a credential issued for a different resource? A successful login to an identity provider does not answer it. Consider an organization that connects a document assistant and an administrative assistant to the same identity system. Both tokens can be genuine while representing different access grants. An assessment should establish whether the document credential remains confined to its intended service, without using production tokens or accessing real administrative data.
Define the boundary before testing
Create a written token acceptance matrix with the server owner. Include the expected issuer, resource identifier, expiry policy, environment, and permitted test identities. Separate signature validation from the business decision about which token belongs at this server. Ask whether a gateway performs the check, whether the application repeats it, and how alternate ingress routes behave. Obtain purpose-built test credentials from the identity administrator. The assessor should not export a user session or manufacture an unauthorized credential for the exercise.
Run a bounded assessment
Run an allowed request with the correct test token as a positive control. Then have the owner provide valid test tokens for another resource, another test tenant where applicable, and an expired grant. Exercise the same harmless read through each supported application ingress. Observe whether an upstream gateway rejects the request and whether any downstream tool executes despite the rejection. Repeat after a session has already been established. This distinguishes an initial connection check from authorization enforced throughout the session lifecycle.
Keep evidence an engineer can use
Keep a redacted request identifier, expected audience, actual policy decision, and downstream execution count for each case. Never place bearer-token values in screenshots, issue trackers, or analytics. A useful finding shows that the wrong-resource credential produced an operation, identifies the accepting component, and describes the possible privilege difference. If a gateway blocked the request before application instrumentation, record that limitation instead of claiming the application independently enforced the rule. Include a permitted positive control to rule out a generally broken integration.
Interpret the result and retest
Prioritize any acceptance that crosses a meaningful service or tenant boundary. Fixing a configuration field is only the first step: repeat the denied cases through alternate routes and existing sessions, then confirm legitimate access still works. Token audience controls do not establish tool-level permissions or user consent, which require separate tests. Document which identity-provider configurations were covered. The official MCP authorization specification is the protocol reference; an implementation assessment must still account for the selected transport and deployed identity architecture.
Assessment scope and next steps
This is a proposed defensive assessment workflow, not a finding about a particular product. Use a staging environment, synthetic records, approved test identities, and an agreed stop condition. Record the model, connector, policy, and application versions so a later result can be compared with the same configuration. Unavailable evidence should remain an explicit coverage gap.
